Use a tranny funnel and add through the dipstick tube.
Mercron transmission fluid is used in a 1978 Ford Thunderbird. Type F fluid can also be used but should not be mixed.

On a 1996 Ford Thunderbird : Through the automatic transmission fluid dipstick tube ( using a funnel ) The dipstick is located near the firewall , in the engine compartment , on the right side of the engine ( passenger side )

its a standard ford C6 passenger car transmission. a truck C6 wont work as i believe the bellhousings are different. torino, fairlane, and Lincoln transmissions should be the same.
For a 1994 Ford Thunderbird : ( DOT 3 brake fluid , meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A )
Probably about a quart as long as you keep the fluid from draining out of the cooling lines once you disconnect them.
