There is an air valve in the battery box near the seat.
Remove both of the seats, removing the rear one first. Then use the wrench and an extension handle in the tool pouch that to hook and turn the shock.
The tires on a 1984 Yamaha Virago XV1000 are 100/90-19 for the front tire. The rear tire should be 140/90-15.

Number one cylinder is the rear one. Why, I don't know but that's what I've been told by a Yamaha mechanic

I have a marago 750 lol. I didn't know it but my maxim 82 750 had the shocks, calipers, rear tire and possibly tree of a virago. I discovered it when getting break pads.
The valve clearance is: INTAKE 0.004in. (0.10 mm) EXHAUST 0.006IN. (0.15 mm) You must the rear cylinder at T for tdc and the front at I for tdc. Wheadjusting valves.
Use the half moon key, sold at Honda dealers for $5. Place on the holes that are drilled at the bottom of the chrome shock. Adjust to the lowest number.
