700r4 gear shift lever want lock in place
bad cable
I have the same car. I just realize it has a automatic handbrake when shift the gear to park
There is not a gear in the engine, they do have a speed limiter in the computer. Also some older automatic transmissions have a "governor" to adjust shift points.
check the brake pedal switch
You cannot you will need to replace the gear shift cables (there are two) because they are stretched. You can check under the lever inside the car to see if the linkage has some-how become loose.
Assuming you are referring to the shift lever position of an automatic transmission, "L" refers to "Low" or "First" gear. It is the highest ratio forward gear of the transmission and is intended to move the car most easily from a standing start.
you have the transmission locked in the " hold " for that gear. To get rid of it push the button on the automatic shift lever below the one you push to put in gear from park.
Follow the gear shift lever down, locate 2 bolts, loosen them, adjust the lever, retighten the bolts. The clutch itself is replaced as a unit ($400) last time I checked, when mine breaks I'll tear it down and take picts as I do so for everyone.
The most likely culprit is the shift cable. It is either broken or has somehow become disengaged and needs to be reattached. Good luck
