It is a self adjusting hydraulic clutch. If it is grinding in gear and not completely disengaging, then you may have air in the clutch line, a loose linkage under the dash to the rod the runs from the clutch pedal across to the lever that actuates the clutch master cylinder. Also, Ford used a plastic line that can bulge with age. I would start with bleeding the clutch system and topping off the fluid and see if that gets things back to normal. If it is slipping, then it is most likely time for a new clutch. There is a small inspection plug on the bell housing that allows you to see the throwout bearing. You should check this to make sure the throwout bearing hasn't come apart/worn out.
