The pulley on air cooled VW's has shims built into the design of the small pulley mounted to the generator. If you loosen the nut on the generator pulley, you will find that it splits apart, allowing shims to be placed between the pulley halves so as to effectively change the diameter of the pulley by changing the amount of space between the pulley halves. If the belt is too loose, remove a shim, try again. If the pulley is too tight, add extra shims, they are normally "stored" just under the nut and dished washer on the outside of the pulley. Hope that this helps. LL
The alternator is rotated on it's pivot to adjust belt tension.
Adjust it.
Loosen the alternator tensioner bolt. You will be able to slide the alternator either way to adjust the tension on the belt.
If it is a drive belt and not a serpentine belt is has no tensioner. You manually adjust the tension by normally adjusting tension by moving the alternator. Loosen to bolts holding the alternator in place and then adjust the tension. Tighten the bolts when the tension is right. If it is serpentine belt if you follow the belt around the the engine you will see the tensioner.
There is no way to adjust the belt tensioner, if it's not keeping enough tension on the belt the complete tensioner itself will need replaced.
you do not adjust tension on a serpentine belt the tension is automatcally adjusted if the belt is loose, replace the belt SOME TIMES THE TENSIONER CAN BE WEEK ALSO.
If it is a serpentine belt, the tension is automatically adjusted by the tension idler. If the belt is loose then the tensioner needs replacing. If it is a normal drive belt, then the alternator is mounted on a slotted bracket that allows you to adjust the position of the alternator. You can loosen the bolts and adjust the tension on the belt.
Apply a wrench to the center bolt on the pully and turn it will adjust the tension.
you dont adjust a tension pulley you adjust the position of the compressor to tighten the belt
Should have a spring loaded belt tensioner
You don't. The timing belt should have a spring loaded tensioner which pulls on the belt to adjust tension.
To loosen the tension on a serpentine belt on a 2005 Grand Caravan 3.8L, turn the nut of the belt tension pulley to loosen it. Adjust the belt, then tighten the tension pulley by turning the nut in the opposite direction.
