What is wrong with a 84 cj7 that starts and will run fine for awhile and then cuts out will crank but not turn over until it cools down?

84 CJ7 258 inline 6 will not start. It turns and fires with starter fluid but will not stay on. Checked fuel filter and pump and they work okay. Ideas?
If you can get it to start with starting fluid, then you're getting spark and air. Check your carb to make sure that the jets are working correctly and you're getting fuel. Is your fuel pump intank or on the side of the block? If you haven't replaced the fuel line from the pump to the carb, I'd suggest you do so.

The stepper motor controls idle speed. A bad motor allows the engine to rev at idle. It often sounds as if the timing is off but not so- It's the stepper motor malfunctioning. I own a stock (original owner) '84 CJ7 6 4.01 straight 6 with a bad stepper motor. There is no replacement part for this stock item - Jeep discontinued it recently. There's no after-market part for this year ('84) unfortunately. You'll need to check out salvage yards or perhaps something custom made advertised elsewhere. I hope this helps somehow.
