When flying an aircraft like helicopters or airplanes ,to avoid heat seeking missiles

you just have to turn off the engine and problem solved!

A correct answer not mislead by Hollywood:There are three ways that are commonly used to avoid heat seeker's.
  1. Passive: this is done by shielding the hot exhaust from the heat seeking system on the missile. The stealth bomber uses this system
  2. Flairs: The aircraft being fired upon puts out one or usually many flairs that burn white hot to attract the missile away from the aircraft. This is fitted to almost every US Military aircraft.
  3. Maneuver: The idea is to have the missile get close enough and then make a turn or other maneuver the missile cant follow. This usually requires several turns done exactly right to get the desired effect.

At how many feet per second does an airplane fall?

Aircraft climb when they start flying and decend when they land. This is usually at a very small rate ( to avoid upsetting the passengers). If you are talking about an aircraft landing then 500 feet per minute is about right

What does separation of air craft mean?

When aircraft are flying it is important that they do not fly into one another. To help avoid this flight paths for aircraft going in opposite directions are separated one form another and each aircraft is separated from those above, below, behind and in front by a 'box' of air this is the separation of air craft.

When departing behind a heavy aircraft the pilot should avoid wake turbulence by maneuvering the aircraft?

above and upwind from the heavy aircraft.

When you are flying in an airplane why can't you see other airplanes?

You can, if you know where and when to look. Generally aviation rules enforce a minimum separation between aircraft on the same flight level. Generally the separation (controlled airspace) for aircraft flying the same direction at the same level is 5 nautical miles (9.3 km). That distance means that the other aircraft will be hard to see (appears like a small dot). Often when flying you do see other aircraft crossing at + or - 1000 feet.... If you can see another aircraft at the same level, this is not generally a good thing... Under visual flight rules, planes must only remain well clear of each other, so you may see another aeroplane if you are in a small plane flying outside of Controlled areas.. your pilot's prime job is to see these planes and avoid them.

There will be no apparent relative motion between your aircraft and the other aircraft. The radar readings should enable the pilots to avoid a collision between aircrafts.
