It helps to have BA in business or marketing or a fashion marketing and merchandising degree which takes 2-4 years to complete in college. However, the retail business is a highly competitive filed and it's often who you know, not what you know that will get you the job. Having a degree may get your foot in the door as an assistant buyer, but usually you would have to start at the bottom and work your way up. As a buyer you also need to have very strong math skills.
