Article Two of the Constitution sets the qualifications required to become president. Presidents must be:

* natural-born citizens of the United States

* at least thirty-five years old

* must have been resident in the United States for at least fourteen years

Vice- presidential candidates must be eligible to assume the presidency.

Candidates must convince the voters that they have the experience, wisdom, intelligence , health and temperament needed to make tough Presidential decisions and meet the demands of the office. During the electoral process, experience or lack thereof is often given as a point in a presidential candidate's campaign.

Candidates need the backing of a political party. In order to appear on the ballot a petition with a large number of signatures must be filed in every state and it take organization to get this done.

You do not become nominated a US President Elect. Once you are elected President, you are elected. You can be nominated a party candidate by winning party primaries and caucuses. The nominees oppose each other in the general election. One is elected. He or she wins the general election. If there is no winner it goes to the House of Representatives. The winner becomes President Elect. The President Elect becomes president upon inauguration.
