You begin by finding a Wiccan circle. Speak with Wiccans in your area and ask to observe a ritual. See for youself if it is what you want and join if you are invited. Do some serious reading about Wicca. Find out what Wicca really is not what you have been told by those frightened or feeling somehow threatened by Wiccans. In the area you live there may be a Metaphysical/New Age/ Pagan/Alternate Religion Book shop... Most of these have a notice board where people involved , or looking to be involved with paganism can communicate with one another... Check these out. Also, most universities and colleges have similar noticeboards. Look into these, be prepared to get to know the people before you get an invitation to "join". Do some reading and research on your own and find a path you are comfortable with. Not all Pagans are Wiccan.

Everyone is born with the potential and the power inside of them to develop well as a Witch. The word itself simply means 'Wise' or 'Wise One'. 'Becoming a Witch' if you like, is the art of retaining that fantastical sense of wonder and curiosity about the world, the innocence, the belief that you can do anything, make anything happen, mixed with the wisdom you have gained over the years and certain talents you may have learnt, and combining them into one, balanced, happy, wise and confident person.

On the subject of Wicca, this is one 'pathway' if you like into the craft, a very good one mind, but not the only one. Wicca is structured (to a point) usually taught and practiced in groups, with each of the festivals being celebrated and each full moon acknowledged. Ritual and spell casting play a large part here.

The biggest part of starting to practise Wicca is learning its history, the roots from which it came, and developing yourself as a spiritual being.

In regards to finding out more information, the Pagan Federation is the main British organization for pagans and witches. Another site, based primarily in the USA, but giving listings for the UK is The Witches Voice. Use Google to search as well - Type in 'Wicca', 'witchcraft', 'the craft', 'paganism', 'ritual', 'magick', 'spells', 'covens', 'meditation', or whatever you need. And look for a copy of pagan magazines such as The Pagan Dawn, or Green Egg (for younger readers) in alternative/ occult bookstores and shops.

Above all, the best thing to help you 'become a witch' is to recognize that you already are one! You may choose to accept guidance, or ask for help along the way, but the journey is ultimately yours. That way, there is only you to blame, you to rely on and trust, and you to help yourself. The path is not easy, it's not all casting and conjuring, in fact it is rarely that at all. It's about self-growth, learning about yourself and accepting the world for who she is and together working towards harmony.

Witchcraft is a religion and is not known to be harmful. The best advice is to be careful of any group that you decide to join, regardless of the religion. Cults and ill-willed people exist everywhere.

Did Wicca start in Britain?

No Wicca became popular in Britain in the 1950's, it did not start in the 1950's. Wicca or Paganism has been around for eons. Look back to ancient history, starting with Celtic tradition (just a place to start) even then Celtic beliefs will take you further back to when Wicca originated No one really knows when Wicca began, were not really suppose to, it is a simple fact of the faith. Shamanism, Paganism and Witchcraft has been around since the civilization of humans. But Wicca started as a religion in England in 1950's. There is no evidence of the existence of Wicca before that. Even Gerald Gardner does not claim so. That practice Gerald Gardner was referring to, that existed for a very long time, was Witchcraft, not Wicca. Wicca and Witchcraft are two things, not the same. Even Witchcraft was not called as Witchcraft since 1600. It is actually Shamanism. The word Witchcraft was introduced by the Vatican in 1600 to call all the Pagan beliefs, nature worship and Shamanism.
