I am doing that right now. It says on the can that it can be applied over an oil based stain...but the stain may continue to "amber" under the coating. I decided to go with the polyacrylic because a friend told me that polyurethane yellows over time. I don't know if that is true...but that is what I decided to do. So far, the acrylic is going over and drying over the oil based stain without any problems.

Never do that. The water based conditioner is designed only for water based stains and will prevent the finish from appearing blotchy. Oil based stain needs to penetrate deeper than a water based conditioner will allow.

Once a piece of wood has been stained, it is very difficult, if not impossible , to remove it. Stain gets down into the grain of the wood and can't be sanded out nor removed by solvents. You can prep the surfaces by sanding with 220 grit paper then the oil based stain will do it's job. But you won;t have the color you desire. Experiment if you can.

Usually, a strong methyl-chloride based stripper will remove water-based stain, which doesn't penetrate as much as oil, from a surface. Dad's Easy Spray is a strong paint and stain remover that I have had much success with, even when removing oil based stains.

How do I refurbish a mahogany coffee table?

First, remove the old finish by sanding or using chemical strippers. Next, use a grain filler that either contrasts with the natural color of the table or the color you intend to stain the table. Next, select a stain and apply it to the table. Finally, select a top-coating like water-based polyurethane and apply a coat.

How do you stain over water damaged wood?

Try using oxalic acid, also called wood bleach, on the water damaged area before attempting to stain the wood. If that removes the stain, sand the surface, use a wood conditioner or a clear stain as a first coat, then apply the colored stain. Once that's dry, apply a clear polyurethane for interior use, or a spar varnish for exterior use.

Can you stain a deck on top of oil paint?

You should check the label on the specific product you're planning to use. If the label states it will adhere to wood with an existing coating, then it's fine to use even over an oil-based stain. (This is because once thoroughly dried, oil-based stains behave the same as water-based stains.) Some products, however, will require the existing stain to be stripped from the wood, or to apply a primer coat over the existing finish before applying new stain.

What is the difference between luster paint and plastic paint?

Lute is an synthetic oil based finish having a semi smooth and mid sheen level. plastic paint is a water based emulsion coating that is normally Matt in appearance. Lustre has a very high washablity, stain resistance and life. Plastic is water based, so limited washabililty.... but it is more environment friendly and easy to apply.

How long does it take stain to dry completely?

It depends on the type of stain you are using, usually the label contains the correct information, oil based stain generally takes 24 hours, water based takes less time, alcohol based takes even less time. If there is no label, it could be old stain and it might not mix well with your finish. your best bet would be to discard and buy new stain to match with your finish. (water based stain with water based finish, and, oil based stain with oil based finish)

How long does it take for stain to dry completely?

Depending on the stain technique it can take anywhere from 2 to 24-hours for the stain to dry. For cabinets, you should wait the entire 24-hours to make sure the stain is not still tacky and to prevent smudges on the finish.

Is a Scotch Guard finish water repellent or stain resistant?

Stain guard...we just bought furniture that has Scotch Gard already on it :) Actually, it is both a water repellent, AND a stain inhibitor. For years we have used ScotchGard on winter clothing, and hunting clothing, including boots, as a water repellent. It works great.j3h.

How do you remove a water stain from a ceiling?

If the stain is dry and the ceiling, if papered, is still sound, then try using a "stain-blocker" paint. Most paint manufacturers produce such paints.* Do not use a water-based paint, such as emulsion or acrylic, because the stain, even though dry, will still bleed through. It is important to remember that two coats may be necessary: the first painted across the stain in one direction and, after that has dried, another coat painted at right angles across the first coat.Do not use any finishing coat until all traces of the stain have been "blotted out" by the stain-blocker. Allow to dry thoroughly and then finish off with one or two coats of ceiling paint i.e. emulsion or acrylic. * Dulux and International Paints(usual disclaimers apply!) are effective.
