A case brief for a law school course is a basically a summary of a case in your case book. Your case brief should include the following:

Case Name

Citation

Relevant Facts

Issue

Holding

Rule of Law

Analysis

Dissent/Concurrence

The amount of detail you put in is subject to what information your professor wants. Some professors just want two lines of facts, the issue, how the court ruled, and why? Other professors want case briefs that are almost as long as the original case. The only reason why they want you to brief is so that you can easily find the answers to their questions. It is a lot harder to find an answer to a question in a 10 page case than a 1 or 2 page case brief.

I would always suggest law students try to find a case brief on the internet and add or subtract from the brief what is needed for your particular class. The reason why is not to reinvent the wheel. You don't need to spend 20 minutes to retype of the relevant facts if it already done for you. Sure, you always want to check what others have written against your case book to make sure it is accurate, but that is a lot faster than doing an entire case brief yourself.
