If the computer thinks your C: drive is invalid, you need to reload the operating system. In those conditions the disk has become corrupted or the OS has been trashed by a virus. If you have a disk in either the floppy drive or the CD drive and the computer is trying to bootload from there, just remove the disk and it should boot ok.
The system disk is the partition from which the operating system was loaded at startup.
In the Add/Remove Programs icon is a tab called Startup Disk, click the tab
the logical choices is:: MAY BE YOUR DISK IS DAMAGED; SYSTEM MALFUNCTION; AND INVALID HARD DRIVE
Go to "System Preferences", then select "Sartup Disk" in "System" section. You gonna see the list of all available partitions for booting. Select the partition you want.

Windows 98 startup disk has some useful utilities and can be used to repair Windows 98 without any additional drives. A floppy which was created by format A s, just have loader, and couple system files to be able to boot MSDOS.

Startup disk for an operating system will just boot the system and load OS basic components in the machine RAM. After that what all it does depends on what else it is programmed to do and what commands/options you select. If you plan to install an operating system it generally will ask you and give a warning that disk or particular partition of the disk will be formatted and you will loose all the data.
sda1 is normally the one. It indicates the first disk's first patrition. if you have more than one disk or you put the system into, for example, the second disk's first patrition. Then the mbr will guide it to boot from sdb1.
It is checking to see if a bootable disk (i.e. windows startup disk) is inserted. Obviously, if it didn't check + your computer didn't work then you wouldn't be able to use your startup disk.
It is simply not compatible with your current version or OS. Or it may be due to corrupt sectors in the drive making a read error and making it display that message.
