For one thing, today many braces are much easier to wear because they are thinner and nearly invisible. You will get used to them and almost forget you have them. Back in the old days, braces were very bulky and clunky and you had to avoid certain foods that could get stuck in them. It's still a good idea to be careful of ice or nuts (they are hard and could cause your braces to get damaged) or sticky foods like Tootsie Rolls that could get stuck in the braces. To be on the safe side, ask your dentist or orthodontist what to avoid, but for the most part , you should be able to eat most things and not be very inconvenienced at all.

Eating certain foods that are hard or chewy can loosen braces. For most situations, common sense will tell you what to avoid. Hard foods, sticky foods and foods high in sugar must be avoided. Hard foods can break or damage wires and brackets. Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. Minimize sugary foods: they cause tooth decay and dreaded white spots. Nail biting, pencil and pen chewing and chewing on foreign objects should be avoided. Now, here is one more step you have to do... Brush your braces! You may need a special kind of toothbrush and special toothpaste just for braces-- your dentist can advise you.

I clean my retainer with my toothbrush and Listerine. There are tablets you can buy that you put in water and they dissolve and clean the retainers!
