To change the thermostat--
* drain the cooling system down to thermostat level (or lower)
* remove the two (2) thermostat housing bolts, and the housing itself
* remove old thermostat, discard gasket and clean both gasket sealing surfaces (pay attention to the orientation of the thermostat when you took it out; it only works one way)
* install the new thermostat
* place new gasket onto water box surface, over the thermostat, and center the thermostat in the opening of the intake manifold
* apply gasket sealant, if necessary
* place the housing over the gasket and thermostat, and torque bolts down to 250 in. lbs.
* refill cooling system to compensate for lost coolant

On a 95 Eagle Vision Tsi (I am unsure of the difference between esi and tsi) the water pump is located behind the timing belt cover and is driven off the timing belt.
the hose that is not connected to the water pump there is a part that is called the goose neck that is covering the thermostat you must remove that first to change the thermostat

Drain the water from your 1995 Chevrolet Corsica cooling system. Remove the water supply hose from the top of your thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. Lift the old thermostat out and drop in the new thermostat.
I have 95 golf and i just change water pump and thermostat and still have coolant coming out of expansion tank
There is no recommended interval, but if you are draining the system for any reason, that would be a good time to do so.

thermostat gasket probably leaking. replace thermostat and gasket making sure that thermostat housing is flat.
I ha a bent frame on my 95 from hurricane damage they put it on a frame puller and its as good as new.
