It will be easier to remove the old bulb and to install the new bulb correctly if you first remove the car's battery. To do so, it is not necessary to disconnect the battery cables, but you must loosen the battery hold down screws. All you need then to do is push the battery aside a bit to provide you sufficient access to the rear of the lamp assembly.
I have been passed by too many oncoming cars that have had the driver's side bulb incorrectly installed. Without reasonable access, it is difficult with many car models to secure the new bulb properly and this results in a driver's side headlight that fails to direct the illumination correctly.
