Geeee!! I own one of these Mitsus... mine is a 2002 also. This problem is caused because of a factory defective gasket on the heater core. (of course this is assuming that the heater core is not punctured or something, which is very unlikely to happen). I have two news for you. The good is that this gasket is very cheap ($10 dollars), the bad one is that is a big problem to replace it. I did it on my own, you don't need special tools, some screwdrivers and some sockets wrenches will do it. You pretty much have to remove the console, then the a/c, and finally you reach the heater core and replace the #@$%% gasket. I can give you more info on how to do it , just e mail me back at juanpablo982@hotmail.com. This kind of job goes for around $600-$900, so I was very encouraged to do it. It is a little pain on the butt but belive me, it is not rocket science, just some patience. Here is some advice do it soon because the bright guys who eengineered that car placed the computer and transmition unit underneat the heatercore. So if you do not fix this problem soon not only you will have to replace the gasket but also these two units!!!
