Hello - I've recently been looking into this myself as one of my side light bulbs has gone on my VW Polo gti.

Below are some really useful links for changing the sidelight bulbs on my model, I'm not sure if they will be exactly the same for other types of polos.

Hopefully they'll be of help to someone though.

Go straight to your local VW garage, I tried this ''small'' job. (Or a least it should be)

Please specify what model year passat, and which "sidelight" you are referring to...

On the B5.5 (2001.5 - 2005) it's quite simple if you're asking about the bumper markers. For those, one side is spring loaded so essentially you push in on the square side, slide backwards a very small distance and the whole thing comes right out.

To change a brake light bulb on a 2003 VW Polo the housing unit must be located. It is found inside the trunk behind a removable plastic piece. Once the plastic is off the bulb can be replaced.

Found this on another thread - worked for me:

Take off the rubber cover.
Loosen the Torx screws (at 3 and 9 o'clock) about half a turn or so, and then you can twist the black plastic assembly (look at the slots that the Torx screws fit through, you will only be able to turn it one way) until it clicks - which is not much. You can then pull the bulb out of the headlight.

Then remove the old bulb from the connecting wires (pull the plastic connector assembly off the back of the bulb) and attach the wires to the new one (push fit for the bulb).

Then fit the bulb back inside the light assembly (little tooth on light bulb casing pointing upwards). When seated then twist the black plasitc assembly the other way, again you should hear a click.

Then tighten the two Torx screws and refit the rubber cover. Job done.
