The thermostat is located on the front of the engine. Drain the water from the radiator. Remove the water hose. Remove the thermostat housing bolts. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.
Remove the water hose from the top of your 1996 Chevrolet 2500 thermostat housing. Remove the thermostat housing retaining bolts. Lift the old thermostat out and drop in the new thermostat.

You can replace the thermostat on a C 15 Caterpillar diesel engine by removing the water hose. Next, remove the thermostat housing bolts. Reverse the process to install the new thermostat.
Thermostat is the whole water outlet on the waterpump.
You might as well change the Thermostat because it is comparatively inexpensive, but test the water pump to see if it needs to be replaced.
