On my 90 740gl it is right next to the ignition coil. It depends on the ignition system used. On a Regina ignition, I think everything is built in the coil (The big square one) The regular round coil is for BOSCH ignition and a separate module is use. NOT SURE, would appreciate confirmation.
What are you looking to fix. I am a Volvo tech. 89 Volvo 740 turbo runs rich blows black smoke all plugs are black but are not oily rev it up change plugs. wires. coil. air filter.
In the 1989 Volvo 740 GL with a Bosch system it is located just above the steering column on the dash.
I don't have the pinout, however you can put your fingers on the relay, put the ignition on you must feel a click at the fuel relay coil. However, the contacts relay are maybe defects, if you have a doubt change it. It's maybe 20$. Be sure about fuses.
On a Regina ignition (to identified check the ignition coil, it's a big square one) if i'ts your case, the sensor is a Air temperature sensor (locate close the air filter)

The arrow light in your Volvo indicates that you are driving it as a 3 speed. You can change this by simply pushing button on side of your shifter. If you do, you change it over to a 4 speed which is best for interstate driving.I learned this by reading my Volvo 740 manual.:-) Hope this helps ya.
to change the distributor on a 740 Volvo undo the 3 captive bolts that attach it to the back of the rocker box you will find it easiest to you use a short box spanner and yes it is awkard
