How do you change fuel pump on 1987 gmc sierra?

The best way to change the fuel pump on a 1987 GM C if it's a side saddle tank.

first take to note that you will have to remove or raise your box of truck.

after you have done that you will have full view of the tank.

Now before you start pulling and tearing stuff off your tank and creating more trubel later for your self I will tell you step by step on how to do a fuel pump swap out.

1) carefully remove the hose clamps from the hoses using a pair of pliers or screwdriver.

2) Now you should have the hoses free to remove. hold on to the stainless steal fuel pump line that you are going to remove the hose from and slowly pull the hose off of the fitting. ( take note that it might be relay on there so you might have to twist and wiggle it.) Repeat steps till all hoses are off the stainless steal fittings.

3) Now that you have all the hoses off you might think that your to start opening the tank up and take the pump out. DON"T DO THAT!!!!!

Before you do any opening of the fuel tank you should clean the surroundings of the tank for dirt and obstructions that could fall in the tank and do damage to your tank and new pump.

4) Now that you have the area clean you may continue with the opening of the tank. With a flat headed screwdriver and a hammer tap the rig that surrounds the fuel pump cap till it slides into the open position.

5) After removing the ring from the tank you will now be able to remove the pump from the tank. pull up slow on the pump and remove it from the tank. you might have to do a little adjusting to get it out of the tank. Once you have it out of the tank it would be better to cover the hole with a big rag or something big enough to cover the opening.

6)Put the new pump back in the same way the old one came out. Re pace the tank ring and tap it back into position to lock the pump into the tank. hook the hoses back on to the stainless steal fittings and apply the clams. Lower the truck box down on to the frame of the truck and tighten it down.

And there you go a pump swap out. Take into consideration that the truck might not turn over first try so keep trying the pump will have to prime its self.
