Please be aware that for 1979 - 1981 Pontiac Firebird/Trans Am models no unique service manuals were created. Instead, model year-specific supplement manuals were printed, which detailed new data specific to their respective model years.
In other words, because the shift knob assemblies from 1979 - 1981 models were no different from the 1978 model year, the 1979 supplement manual refers the user to the 1978 service manual.
This is why the "7B-21_pic" service manual image says it's from the "1978 PONTIAC SERVICE MANUAL".

is it a hyd trans, ? gear shift ? not enough info
yes, that can happen.
First it would help to know if it is an automatic or a manual trans, then the question would be easier to answer.
the trans will still shift into gear with a bad clutch you will find tho, sometimes this will not happen. usaully it is NOT indicative of other problems.
If it is a manual trans, the shift linkage might be loose, bent, or damaged.
how do you change the light on the gear shift of a 2003 Lincoln navigator
Some of the newer computer controlled transmissions will not go into gear or shift until they are warm. I have a 97 Taurus did would not shift out of first when motro got up to normal running temp. Mechanic said we had a bad trans. I change the filter and fluid and it has been runnig good for about a month. maybe a sticky valve in trans
yes, for most repairs
It is most likely stuck in second gear which is the "Limp" mode on the trans. There is something wrong with the trans and it should be taken to a good trans shop to be scanned for problems.
Loose hold down clamp or broken shift cable.
light is out in the gear shift area between the seats, how can I change it?
change the tranny fluid evry oil change it might straighten out with fresh Honda transmission fluid
