The entire dash must be removed. There are visible screws inside the cab and then there are more fasteners on the firewall side. It is a very difficult process. I bought a core from a local business and after struggling with it for about a week I took the truck in and had it done. It isn't an easy job. There are a few sites on the net with pictures of the process but I can't find them right now.

go to autozone.com. and click on the heater core part for your sonoma. then there should be an install manual button u click on on the page. i have a 98 gmc wit a heater core out also. i think the 97 models you just have to take off the dash.
Well, i have a 1998 Gmc Sonoma. My heater core just went out and i took it to all the mechanics in my town. they all sayed it would take at LEAST 5-9 hours of labor. plus the price of the core
