Since the oil pan is designed to capture oil as it drains out of the engine, the oil pan must be at the lowest part, and as such, the oil pan hangs from the crankcase and is always underneath the crankshaft. To find the oil pan, just find the engine, climb underneath and look for the big part that has a drain plug... that's the oil pan.
