A mechanical fuel pump runs off of either the camshaft or the crankshaft so if you remove it you will need to plug the hole. The simplest solution is to leave it in. The electric fuel pump should be matched to your mechanical one for fuel pressure, the info should be available in the vehicle's specs but many electric fuel pump after-market manufacturers make that information available or match one to your vehicle. It is simple to mount it to any protected location. Mounting it to the body or motor usually is sufficient to ground it then all you need to do is connect it to your ignition or other location which provides power only when the vehicle is turned on. Using a meter is very useful for locating a spot such as a location in the fuse panel.
