The JOHN DEERe Electromagnetic PTO clutch assembly as John Deere calls it is mounted on the lower portion of the engine crank shaft, much like a lawn mower blade on a regular push mower. You will need an impact wrench to loosen the bolt holding the assembly onto the crank shaft. On the 160 the wiring to the PTO is a group of wires encased in a yellow sleeve running to a plug several inches from the PTO itself. Unplug the wiring harness before loosening the bolt that holds the unit onto the crankshaft. Its a pretty simple process and just reverse the procedure to put the new part on the unit. Here is a link where you can purchase the PTO assembly on line if you choose. Happy fixin.

Remove the belt, Pull the two wires from their connection, they only go in one way so don't worry about how they come out. Block the crankshaft from turning and loosen the bolt, it has a keyway, so just pull down if it doesn't fall off. Be careful it's heavy.
First you must un-plug the wire that comes from the clutch to a plastic plug in and then you are ready to take the clutch off the shaft. The bolt that holds the clutch to the shaft is a coarse thread bolt and has right hand threads so you gotta hold the engine from turning as you un-thread the bolt by remembering lefty loosey and righty tighty so you will turn left to loosen this bolt and the washer is a special washer so do not lose it along with the bolt.Be careful as the bolt comes out the clutch will come down and cause you to injure your hand and it falls off the shaft and reverse this to put the new on on the shaft.Has a key inside to align to the shaft so it is easy to align to the shaft.
One might be able to answer how to change the electric PTO clutch by looking in to their John Deere users manual. Another way to do this would be to take it to an experienced lawn tractor mechanic.
remove the mower deck. there is one bolt center of crank shaft protruding at bottom of engine that drives the clutch..be careful as clutch is very heavy and may fall on your head!!

Need help in routing the transmission drive belt on my 165 hydro john deere
There's a yellow switch in the upper right hand portion of the dash. It's the PTO drive. Engage your clutch, pull up on the switch and move it forward, and that should start the blades spinning. If it fails to engage, it could be a bad switch or a bad battery.

The tranny has to come out. Expect to pay $500 labor plus $165 for the clutch. Don't attempt this repair unless you are an experienced mechanic.
Type your answer here... my 165 did the same thing, clogged fuel filter. once I cleaned / replaced the filter it worked fine.
