Remove the four screws from the lower panel under the steering column. Remove the horn button. Revove the steering shaft nut. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel. Now use a lock plate depressor tool to press down the notched plate that is held onto the shaft. Remove the circle spring clip from the steering shaft and slide the notched plate off the shaft after removing the plate depressor. Remove the screw that holds the directional lever in place and tape it to safely out of the way so as not to damage it. Then remove the screw from the emergency flasher button on the dise of the column and remove the safety flasher button. The switch should now be visible. Three screws (#3 Phillips head) screws hold it in place but you need to unplug the wires beneath the dash in order to remove it.

The wires travel down the inside of the column inside of a plastic sleeve that has a pair of tabs that align over two of four bolts that hold a steel plate to the bottom of the steering column. The U shaped steel plate is bolted into a pair of firewall brackets with two nuts with long studs so you need to use a deepwell socket to loosen them up till you can create enough "wiggle room" to get the wires out. Once you have lowered them remove the four bolts that hold the column and lift up the column to pull the two notched tabs from the plastic sleeve from their respective bolt anchors, which will be shaped like half inch squares. Now follow the wires downward until you find where the plug is slid onto a steel bracket above the column. Push it out of it's holder there and find a release tab on the plug and unplug it. Note how the wires are very nearly bent at 90 degrees where they go into the plug itself. Use a piece of tape to make the plug end as skinny as you can. By gently easing up on the directional switch while coaxing the plug up into the column while using your knee to raise the column up you should be able to slide the directional wires and switch all the way out of the column. A stubborn one might make you remove the nuts under column and lower the steering column all the way down.

Put the plastic sleeve on your new switch and slide it back down the shaft. Plug it in and test it along with your brakes applied to make sure it works before you put the column all back together in the same order you tooke it apart, reversing the previous steps. Tking care not to pinch the wires and making sure you get the column bolts retightened to the same tightness they were before you removed them.
