It is under the left headlight. Take the air ducting loose from the mas air flow sensor on the left fender panel and it is down there. Get a new one and you can see whayt it looks like before you start.
The air filter is under the black plastic on the left front under the hood. Step 1 is to remove the two 10 mm head bolts holding the air box. Next loosen the hose clamps on either end and remove upper box. Third dissengauge metal clips on box below and remove cover.. Air filter is now accessible
well, i have an '01 and what i have to do it untighten the clamps on the air filter box and on the motor and get the hose very very loose or else its impossible to take the cover off lol. then vice-versa when putting it back on... its a lot of trouble.
I have seen Ford use two different methods for the explorers. Usually it is a air box that has four screws(actually they are small mm sized bolts) holding it on. Undo these four screws and then lift the top cover up. Then reach in and pull the air filter out. Then replace with a new and then rebolt the box. The other version has four clips. You just push the latches down on all four and then remove the top. I hope this helps you. Good luck, Brad.
Asuming you mean the 3.8L engine in the base or GT model the air filter box is held on by 2 metal clips along the top, flip them off then pull the lid assembly toward the engine to free the old filter. Be careful if the engine is still hot, because the radiator hose is pretty close and can hurt a bit if you bump into it. put in the new one and close the air lid. close the metal clips and your done... No tools should be needed, check your local auto parts store for the correct replacement filter before you begin. the V8 5.3l engine in the GXP should be pretty similar, but I have the GT model so I don't know for sure
It doesn't have a filter, there may be a coarse screen under the wiper cowl on the passenger side.
