Remove tire, brake caliper and disk. Remove cotter pin and ball joint nut. Break(so to speak) the ball joint from the hub with a pickle fork if it does not separate easily. You'll have to remove the axle nut (36mm deep socket needed) and pull the driveshaft from the hub so that you'll have enough clearant to remove and replace the ball joint. Undo the bolts or chisel out the rivets of the ball joints. Install replacement ball joints and tighten bolts to specs. And 'installation is the reverse of removal' so my retarded haynes manual would say.
I think 2000-2002 are welded in.

you take off the tire and then take off the brake rotor and calipers and the the spendle and need a ball joint remover , rent from auto zone and then press out ball joints and then press in new ball joints and reassymble!
I had this problem on my 2000. I lubed all the fittings, especially upper and lower ball joints and the noise went away. Chevy wants you to lube every oil change. If you still hear the noise you'll have to replace. Check the Anti-Sway Bar bushings and where they attach to the A-Arm.
