Changing a VW GTI/Golf batteryOn a Mark IV you need to remove the box surrounding the battery by simply pull it apart at the corners, there are interlocking tabs so you're not breaking it out. After you have the box removed you should remove the driver side headlight access panel so you can reach the metal plate that is securing the Battery. When you have the headlight access panel removed you should see a bolt, 10 or 12mm take the bolt and plate off, disconnect terminals if you haven't already and put a new battery in. The reverse steps.

Removing the battery will cause you to lose the clock and the radio on some year VW's. The radio will need the key to reset it or it will not work. You can get around this with a trickle charger hooked up in tandem with the battery, the idea is to always be feeding the car's system twelve volts until the new battery is installed.
