The only tools that you'll need for this simple project are a small ratchet with a 25mm torx bit. You'll find that the torque driver provided in your tool kit is a bit too long to remove the 2 rear screws on the bottom filter panel (8). By removing the floor mat, you'll also find a bit more room to work with.
Start by removing/sliding the side vent panel (1) back by turning the plastic screw (2) located at the rear of the panel. You can find it by moving the passenger seat back in it's farthest position. Using a dime, turn the plastic screw to it's vertical position. The vent panel can then be removed. (3) (4)
Next, take out the two torx screws (5) that hold the kick panel in place (just below the glove box). Once you've removed them, it's just a matter of pulling the down the kick panel (6) and exposing the white box that houses the filter (7) Remove the 4 torx screws that hold the bottom panel of the filter in place. (8) Slide out the used filter (10) and replace it with a new one. The old filter cannot be reused and should be discarded. (11) Submitted By: Art

On US market 960s from 1995 on, there is no interior cabin filter.
The cabin air filter of a 2004 Volvo s40 is located behind the glove compartment. To install a new filter simply remove the glove box and the filter can easily be replaced.
960 S90 does not have a cabin air filter, Volvo started putting them in the 850 deries

I own a 2001 Volvo v40 and the interior cabin filter is on the passenger side under the dash. Where the passengers feet would be. There was one cover I had to unscrew & remove and then the filter was exposed. Good Luck!
I have not done it yet, but I have been told by more than one Volvo Dealership that it requires removing the gas pedal to get to the cabin air filter (it's apparently on the driver's side). Good luck!
