This process takes around an hour and a half. I recommend you doing it your self as the dealer quoted me hundreds with time involved. Lexus made these cars so they make it so you bring it in to the shop! You need these tools: screwdriver, socket wrench, and strong hands. You will need to first dissemble the battery to get your hand behind the headlamp and twist the two prongs and pull out. The front engine plastic housing has to be removed and a safety bar. Remember not to touch your new headlamp bulbs or else it will limit there life span. It's simply easy once you have your hand behind and twisting the plastic prong behind the light!
the whole assemnly? or the bulbs? to remove the whole assembly the bumper comes off. the blubs just suck and are in a crappy stop. not to much to do. besides the bumper if you want the whole assembly out I have been told by my Mazda dealer that the front side panels need removing in order to replace a head light, at a cost of approx 30 mins labour and the price of a bulb. Seems unreasonable, but apparently this scenario is more common nowadays. I was told that the best option is not to go to the dealer but to order a higher quality bulb and have another shop install it because it will last longer and the mechanic will probably show you what they did so you can do it the next time.
LOW BEAM: there is a rubber gasket that surrounds the headlight. Unplug the wire harness by pressing in the tab at the back of the plug and pulling on the plug. Remove the rubber gasket and the headlight is just behind it. You will then see a wire clip that is spring loaded that hooks on a clip that holds in the bulb. The low beam bulb is an H7. It is also importnat to realize the adapter connected to the low beam bulb. It may be stuck quite well, so be careful. The passenger side is crowded by the washer fluid resevoir. HIGH BEAM: the high beam can be removed by unplugging the wire harness by pressing the tab at the back of the plug and pulling on the plug. Turn the headlight socket to the unlock position and remove the bulb. The high beam bulb is a 9005 Please note: DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS BULB WITH YOUR BARE HANDS. If you do touch it, clean it immediately. The oils from your skin can cause premature bulb failure.
The battery is at the rear firewall on a Lexus 2000 GS 400. Removing it has no advantage in replacing a bulb, but the battery should always be disconnected before performing any electrical work. There is a plastic cover that screws off at the rear of the headlight housing. Access is very tight, but can be done. Inside, there is a metal "cap", securied by a spring clip. Remove the clip, and the bulb housing is accessible. I take the battery out and the bulb is right there. It's a lot easier than taking out the whole lens assembly. That bulb out warning is pretty accurate. If it says there is a bulb out, you can count on it. If the light is still on after replacing the headlight bulb (it checks the head light bulbs too), then you'll have to check all the bulbs.
