We operate a repair garage and had to replace a steering column in this vehicle due to worn bearings. The customer wanted to keep the keys he had, so this required switching out the ignition. Be aware though that any time you undertake repairs on your vehicles, things may not go as anticipated - we accept NO responsibility for issues caused by following the process below, and no liability. You use this advice at your OWN RISK!
SO, now that I'm done with the warning -- these ignitions actually have TWO tabs and corresponding holes to release the ignition cylinder, not just one as many vehicles do.
After removing the plastic cowling that fits over the steering column, you will see the white-metal ignition mechanism. First, turn the key to the ON position. You can disconnect the battery in the trunk if you can't stand listening to the bells.
You will need a small Allen key or a mechanic fine-point pick tool (or a REALLY solid paper clip -- even a thumb tack if you're stuck).
With the ignition key to ON, place the pointed tool into the hole that is closest to the key. This hole is apx 3mm wide. If you are able to actually see into the hole, you will turn the ignition just a FRACTION towards the ACC/OFF position, and this will bring the front metal locking tab over to where you can see it. Push down and depress it. Turn the key VERY VERY slightly more towards the off position and HOLD IT THERE. Now, the second hole is about an inch and a quarter further away on the barrel, and tiny - maybe 2mm tops - it MAY be filled with grease or locktite and you may not see it at first, but it is there. Clean the grease out with your pick to see better into it. You will insert your tool into that hole, depressing the second tab in there, and turn the key slightly more towards off. It should pop right out for you. If it doesn't, it will eventually, it is finicky.
If you don't succeed first try, push the ignition all the way back in, and restart the process. You will develop a feel for where the tabs are, and hear the clicks when you turn too far. Keep trying and you will succeed.
I don't know how to change the ignition switch but I have some advice. Don't screw with the ignition switch, buy the whole steering column. It will be cheaper and easier to change.
GM vehicles do not use inertia/reset switches.
