I don't know how to change the ignition switch but I have some advice. Don't screw with the ignition switch, buy the whole steering column. It will be cheaper and easier to change.
YES

do I remove steering wheel to change out ignition
how to change steering column on 86 pontiac bonneville
Because when you change the ignition in a firebird you have to use the same key and key lock that was on the original column. If you don
Lower the steering colunm. the ignition switch is located on the top of the steering column about 6 inches from the firewall.
Remove steering wheel and signal switch
Not sure what you mean by change the ignition on a diesel, diesel engines don't have spark plugs, spark plus wires, coil, etc.... If you are asking about the ignition switch, it is mounted on top of the steering column on most pre 2000, after that they are located in the steering column.
i would change the electrical part of your ignition switch- i would change the electrical part of your ignition switch-
You will have to remove the steering wheel and everythin that surrounds the steering column in order to get the ignition switch out. I would suggest getting a good repair manual as this is not an easy process to describe without pictures and such.
On my 2001 Aztek, I could pull the key out when driving. To change the ignition without removing the steering wheel, take the two screws out from underneath the covering behind the wheel. Not the screws on the steering wheel. The cover will lift up but won't come off. Take an Alleen wrench and feel for the hole on top of the ignition (it will be a tight squeeze), and push in. I should also say remove the black or gray cover on the ignition switch (where the key goes in). Once you find the hole and push down on it, the ignition switch will come out.
