1-open the armrest and you'll see 2 round plastic caps. Insert the putty knife under the caps to pop them off to reveal the Phillips screws and remove the screws.
2-insert the putty knife into the cracks around the armrest trim to pry and release the trim
3-insert the putty knife into the cracks around the trim around the gearshift lever to pry and release its trim
4-insert the ignition key and turn it to the position that allows you to move the gearshift lever out of park. Rotate and move the trim away from the radio area.
5-Return the gearshift back to park and remove the key.
6-the shifter should be exposed and underneath the "PRND123" there should be a black wire leading to a small light.
it just pulls right out and there you go. it is very straight forward.
of course to put it all back together just do it in reverse.
Just like changing engine oil only in a different location and with different oil.

Remove the plastic shield marked: "oil filter and oil drain" on the splash guard under the motor.Easy to reach easy to change.
The only person to ask is the one who agrees to take on the job. The best choice, by far, is to sell your 1997 automatic transmission Forester and buy one with a manual transmission. Or you could even scrap the one you have and buy the one that has the equipment that you prefer. In my opinion you will still spend less money. -- Ken
