Place a bucket of some sort that can hold 10 quarts under the drain plug on the bottom of the engine, pull the drain plug. After its done draining out you can put the plug back in and wipe any engine oil that got on the engine off. Then move the bucket under the oil filter and pull the oil filter letting the oil from there drain into the bucket as well as pouring any oil in the filter into the bucket. Once oil almost completely stops dripping out you can take a new oil filter for a duramax, spread a little of your new oil on the O ring seal on the top with your finger and put it in place of the old filter just making it hand tight. Then you can dispose of the old oil and filter properly and fill the engine with new oil. The engine should take 10 quarts and I always use rotella 15W40 oil but you can do some reading to see which oil will work best for you. I recommend putting about 9 quarts in, then running the engine for a second, then shut it off, pull the dipstick, wipe all the oil off of it, then putting it all the way back in and pulling it back out and check what level the oil is at. Add a little oil at a time, running it for a second or two in between oil adding until the dipstick is at the full mark.

The drain plug for the engine oil on a duramax should be on the back of the oil pan at the very bottom.
I use Amsoil 15W40 fully synthetic oil in my Duramax 6.6 LBZ. Runs great and no problems.
