Make sure to have an oil drain pan that will slide under the engine and hold at least 3 quarts of oil. Loosen 17mm oil drain bolt on left underside of engine just below where radiator hose connects to engine block, slide oil pan under engine and finish removing loose oil drain plug by hand and drain oil. Next remove oil filter, you may need to use a small oil filter wrench to loosen filter, remove filter and drain any excess oil into oil pan. remove oil pan from under bike, clean area around drain plug opening and reinstall oil drain plug snugly, do not overtighten. Next install new oil filter by first lubricating rubber oil seal on face of filter with a light coat of fresh oil then screw filter on by hand until tightly snug, if you do not feel you have enough strength in your hand to tighten filter securely by hand, tighten as much by hand as possible and use filter wrench to tighten filter another quarter to half turn. Next remove oil fill dipstick cap and place medium oil funnel in its place and fill engine with 3 quarts of SAE 10W-40 motorcycle oil and reinstall the dipstick cap. check to make sure no oil is leaking from engine then start the engine, the oil warning light if equipped will stay on for a few seconds until the engine builds up oil pressure then will go out, if it does not go out stop the engine and check for leaks. With oil warning light off allow engine to run for a couple of minutes while checking for any leaks around the oil filter area. then shut down engine and check oil level to confirm it is on the full mark of the dipstick. (Note) most motorcycle oil is 1.05 quarts so 3 of these will fill the VT1100 engine to the proper level with filter change, if you are using an oil that contains exactly one quart you may need to add a slight bit more oil after running the engine and checking the oil level.
