The bulb on the highlander is in a plastic holder that screws ? snaps into the hole in the tail light from the inside of the vehicle. On each side just in line with the brake light is a small pannel that just snaps out of and into place. Remove this small panel and behind it you will see 3 bulb holders in a verticle row . Remove the one that is out by turning the bulb holder counter clock wise (to the left) CAUTION : you can drop the bulb holder and it will fall down into the lower finder well and is near impossible to retrieve. It is best to cover the hole in the finder with some tape or ?? . Replace the bulb by pulling the old one out and insert the new bulb. Put the bulb holder back into the hole , align the ears with the proper slots in the tail light and turn to the right until it stops and is in the same position as the others. Replace the small panel and you are done.

Open the rear hatch, there is a plastic panel that is at the top of the hatch which is long and thin.. It snaps out and the light is behind it. Careful though, the clips break.. I took it Toyota, I couldn't figure it out..
