Hey, i have a 2002 s-10, and it really doesn't come off, not by it self anyways. instead you need to push down the boot and the bottom of the shifter. you will see where you can disconnect the shaft and knob together from there.

Here's how to remove it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH2qZPIK7jQ
There is a torx screw on the same side as the button, unscrew it half way and lift up the shift with the boot.
chevy silverado ha automatic transmission . shift lever on column when put in or out of gear flops up and down . is it hard to put a spring in the column to repair
unscrew the knob
It is glued on you have to replace the entire stick shift
2002
There is a clip on the front of the knob. Pry it out with a screwdriver.
Removing the shift knob is actually very simple if you have the Volvo "Spaceball" setup: Just push down on the knob and rotate it counter clockwise about 90degrees then pull up to remove the knob from the shaft. Depending on what type of shift knob you are replacing it with, installation of the new one may differ. See: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?136135
