I just did this last week. I have a 1988 Jeep Comanche 4.0 V6. It's a lot easier than I thought it would be. 1. Disconnect your battery ;) 2. Remove the two wires attached to your starter held by a nut and a lock washer...using a ratchet, you may need to have an extender to reach these and other nuts/bolts. 3. Once free from the wires, there are two bolts (one pointing front, the other back) holding the starter on...take 'em off! 4. Don't lose the nuts and bolts! 5. That's it. Now you can either take it to a parts store to get them to check it, or, if you're careful, check it with your own battery and two wires (I don't suggest this unless you're steady-handed and know what you're doing). You can also now see the fly wheel and inspect it for damage now that you've taken off the starter. Good luck!

I have had two Jeep Cherokees a 91 and a 98 and have replaced the starers on both, its a pretty simple job. If your laying under the engine and looking at the oil pan it will be to the right, under the oil filter. There are two bolts holding it to the crankcase, one on the top of the starter and one on the bottom. Simply remove the two bolts and then disconnect the positive and negative wires. Make sure the battery is disconnected first or else your gonna have sparks! Then all you have to do is reconnect the wires and bolts.

If it is the same as a 98 Jeep Cherokee sport 4.0, then all you have to do is locate the starter on the bottom of the engine under the oil filter on the passenger side. It should have a large round piece and a smaller gold solenoid attached to it.

1st. Disconnect the positive wire on the battery. One of these wires runs straight to the starter which can short out the car or shock you.

There are two small bolts on the starter that secure the positive wire from the battery and the ground. Remove these first

Their are two large bolts holding the starter to the engine. One is in the front and the other one is in the back, pretty easy to get too.

Once you have removed all bolts the starter will pull free easily.
