On my 1993 Lexus ES300, the thermostat was down on the side of the engine near /in the water pump. You'll need to take off the passenger side front wheel, and the wheel well protective lining... Even then it is most obnoxious to get in there. You'll also (obviously) have to take off at least one belt, which means loosening the alternator (possibly), and the belt tensioner bolt.
