I have a 97 with the 3.9 v6 Follow top hose toward engine. Thermostat is under that goose neck. Need a 6 in extention with ratch (3/8 drive works best) Extendable magnet. As you loosen bolts use magnet so you don't drop the bolts. You can get goose neck out by pulling up & twisting a little at an angle. use magnet to get thermostat out, Clean off old gasket. use magnet to put in new thermostat. Put gasket on goose neck & bolts thru holes. I used a very fine wire around bolt at the gasket & up around bolt head to hold in place. put goose neck back in same way as you took off. I never removed any hoses or brackets & was done in about 30 min.
