Not the Freelander 1, but the 2007- freelander 2,s have an above reliablity score meaning they are reliable. If your going to buy the first gen freelander you should be prepared for issues! Hope this helps.
Drain the radiator down 1/2 way. At the engine end of the top radiator hose is the thermostat housing. Remove the housing and install a new thermostat.

Drain the radiator down 1/2 way into a container. Remove the top radiator hose from the engine end. The housing is where the thermostat is located. Remove the 2 bolts and the housing. Remove the thermostat and clean the surfaces and install the thermostat.

Unlike most cars where the thermostat is on top of engine. The 300 has its thermostat at the bottom of the engine. follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator back to the engine block. It is hooked to the thermostat housing, and of course... the thermostat is just under the housing. Its not easy to change, expect 1-2 hours , on a good day.

all you need to change the thermostat is a #25 trox driver- there are three screws 2 at the top and 1 on the lower left side
1 is a turbo diesel and 1 is a turbo sport
Depends on the motor it has but anywhere from 3 to 4 1/2 hours for the1.8,1.9 tdi unless its the vr6 then 5 to 7 hours...
