the timing belt is located on the left side of the engine in the engine bay. Most mechanics will probably have to disconnect the motor mount to elevate the engine to access the cover and belt. the cover has three bolts holding it. Of course, you would have to remove the serpentine belt to access. Be aware of the serpentine belts positioning, it seems to be a common question! Oops, misunderstood the question , thought the qestion read 1999 not 1989. Anyway, this is for the Escort ZX2!
