There should be a plug on the transfer case itself. It's better to jack up the front of the vehicle as high as you can get it or vacuum the fluid out. Once you remove as much fluid as you can, make the vehicle level again and put enough fluid in to where it's level with the drain hole. Plug and go. Or, you can take the plate off completely to get ALL the fluid out, which is actually the best way, but you'll have to replace the gasket. Restore proper fluid level as stated above.

If it is a 1/2 ton, it is 5 QTS. with fluid and filter change. If it is a 3/4 ton, it is 7.7 QTS. with fluid and filter change.

It sounds like you need to change your transmission fluid but call a car dealer and ask.
On my 03 Chevy Silverado I just added brake fluid and the message turned off.
