To change the Transmission Fluid on a 2002 VW Passat, you would have to take it to a dealer and have them do it, since they need a special tool, an electronic tester, to check the fluid level. The fluid cannot be too hot or too cool to get an accurate measurement since fluid expands when warmed. Ther is no ATF dipstick. The fluid level is measured electronically.
I believe this car has a sealed transmission and so the fluid cannot be changed.
You can't change the transmission fluid on any volkswagon Passat no matter what the year. I have a 2004 volkswagen passat and my friend accidently let the transmission fluid out instead of the oil , and I had to spend 311 dollars to get it all replaced. The volkswagon car dealership out here, where I live, said that they are the only ones who can change the transmission fluid on this particular model vehicle. Sorry, about that
The transmission fluid is not meant to ever need servicing unless the transmission pan has to be removed to repair the transmission. there are special tools involved that are a pain to use.
The 2002 Volkswagen Passat has a 5-speed manual.

There is NO drain plug! To change fluid you have to remove the transmission pan.
I do it at about 50K miles.
All there is to do is to change the fluid and the filter.
