There can be several things that will cause your 1994 Jeep grand Cherokee to make a loud clanking noise when you drive it. The most common cause is a bad u-joint.
should be behind the engine; towards the top and front of automatic transmission (what would be the bell-housing). Hard to get to, must have u-joint socket. Looks like a little "flashlight" or cylinder 2 inches long 1/2 diameter. It is magnetic.
u joint on drive shafts
specificaly99+, 3.4l automatic 4spd2004 3.4 automatic
Rear shaft = 1/2 hr to pull the shaft & 1/2 hr to change each u-joint. Front wheel joints about 1.4 hrs per side Front shaft u-joints (non cv), 1/2 hr to pull the shaft & 1/2 per u-joint These are approx times only
I just replaced a cv joint on a 1995 grand Cherokee the part cost me about 150 bucks.Im not sure but I would think the 97 would have the same part number
Possible failed U joint or cv joint at the left front wheel
I think you mean axle shaft joint. A crunching noise, especially when turning corners suggests bad axle shaft joints.
It is a U-joint and it is actually pretty easily done with some basic tools. Here is a short write up of how to do it: http://www.myjeepxj.com/index.php?page=u-joint-replacement
