Replacement of Timing Belt (TB) - print out SOHC mechanical section from above link and read... 1) Remove RHS front wheel. 2) Remove splash cover plate, 3 nuts and Philips screw below. - this will give you access to the crankshaft pulley and TB cover. 3) Remove alternator and AC belts. 4) Remove crank pulley. (Lock crank with screwdriver in crankcase locking hole below crank case near exhaust pipe.) 5) Remove TB covers top and bottom. 6) Verify timing marks as per service manual before removing old TB. - For familiararity. 7) Remove old TB and tensioner. 8) Inspect tensioner and repack with grease or replace. Use sponge to help compress grease into bearing. 9) Fit tensioner and attach spring. Do not tighten. 10) Check both crank and camshaft pulleys marks are aligned. 11) Fit the TB. Put the TB on the camshaft pulley only about 10mm and hold in place with light clamp. 12) Put the TB around the water pump, tensioner and crank pulley. Slide on gently. 13) Unclamp TB at camshaft pulley and slide on completely. 14) Rotate crank twice and check timing mark. Tighten tensioner bolt. 15) Replace TB covers. 16) Replace crank pulley - use some locktite. Lock crank with screwdriver in crankcase as in 4). 17) Inspect / Replace fanbelts -do NOT over tighten. 18) Replace splash cover plate. 19) Replace Wheel.

remove the belt. then in center of the tensioner is a bolt that goes into engine. remove this bolt. then tensioner should come off.
The 1998 S-10 2.2L engine does not have a timing belt.
You can change the serpentine belt by loosening the tensioner pulley. When the tensioner pulley is loose and the serpentine belt will become loose. Put the new serpentine belt on and tighten the tensioner pulley.
