TCU is probably in trans pan, read this first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hi All Y'All - My 98 ML locked up in limp mode about 2 weeks or so ago and refused to get out of it. I took it into a local indie shop who specializes in MB, and a computer readout from his shop said the following:
ME2
Active Faults
01 > P0700: Transm.Contr.System, Malfunction
ETC 6 (Electronic Transmission Control 6)
01 > 41 CAN-Communication with transfer case control module faulty
02 > 134 Intermittent CAN-Communication ESP distorted
03 > 135 Intermittent CAN-Communication ME distorted
04 > 137 Intermittent CAN-Communication with transfer case module faulty
Traction Systems
Active Faults
01 > C1022: CAN communication with engine control module (ME-SFI)(N3/10) interrupted
02 > C1030: CAN communication interrupted with VGN78
IC (Instrument Cluster)
Active Faults
01 > B1040: CAN communication fault to engine control module
02 > B1041: CAN communication fault to traction systems control module
03 > B1470: Fuel level sensor (B4)
04 > B1089 CAN communication fault to transfer case module
----------------------------------------------
The computer that this shop uses is PC Retriever system. Here's what got fixed in the ML:
Replaced the complete valve body with a rebuilt valve body - $ 659
Replaced pan gasket - $ 17
Replaced Transmission case control module - $316
Labor - 4 hrs - $ 350
Transmission Fluid - $ 120
Total: $ 1462
------------------------------------------------
Result: Smooth shifting transmission, no problems with transmission.
Is everything else okay? ***NO*** As I left the shop, I heard the familiar fuel pump whistling. I've to retrieve my records to see what was upgraded a few years ago -- there was a tech bulleting by MB to repair/replace some or all components of the fuel pump/fuel filter/fuel lines, and I had the work done by the local MB dealer, but don't recall what had been done.
The "low range" light still blinks when I start the car. I do not need to use the low-range for anything at all. However, the indie tells me that the transfer case motor and sensor should be replaced, because even if I don't use the low range, the computer will think there's a problem and lock the ML again in limp mode.
Is the belt-tensioner pulley a known or common problem? On occasion it screeches for a few seconds like two cats in a fight, and most of the time there is absolutely no indication that there's anything wrong!
If any of you have any thoughts, suggestions, opinions on the above, please do share - I love the way the ML drives, but am beginning to tire of the expenses for ongoing maintenance and unpredictability.
Which control module?
TCM= Transmission control module.
Check the modulator cable and the transmission pressure module. Adjust cable and clean or replace trans module. Cheers!
P1700....Malfunction Indicator Lamp requested by trans control module
on the trans hump, center floorpan under the dash
I think there is no 96 Trans Am. The Trans Sport module is on the rear center of the engine. Remove and replace it with standard US or metric tools. There are three electrical plugs to remove from socket. The Trans am didnt die till 2002 there was one in 96.
its on the passenger side near the glovebox, take out the glove box and you should see it
yes but you may need to change the trans control module too
Engine, trans, and abs are under the hood. Body, ac, cluster are inside the dash.
your tcm (trans. control module) will store a code and the symptoms will include inop. speedometer or out of calibration.
Hey there, I'm looking at the service manual for Contour/Mystique right now and it says the automatics have a separate ignition control module and the ignition control module for standard transmissions are fully incorporated into the vehicle computer. You mean your after market manual. There is no module in a 1997, auto trans or stick. My crank sensor was getting no voltage to it and i spent a day looking for that module, come to find the wires that connect to the sensor go directly to the computor. Im sure there is a module in one of the years the manual covers for auto trans but not a 1997 2.0 contour/mystique.
Have the trans computer checked for codes, and ask a new question about the code you get.
