I am the proud owner of a 1963 Ford Galaxie. 4.7L, 289c.i. V-8 (w/ factory air: more belts).

The 1st thing to do is remove the generator from the engine compartment. This requires the removal of 3 bolts. 2 on the top (which are obvious and easy), and one on the bottom (which isn't so tricky to get out, but it's a "knuckle-banger" to get back in). After it's loose, take the two belts off the pulley. Once it's free of the engine compartment, take it to an auto parts store. Ask them to "bench test" the generator. Many stores will do this for free (I know O'Reillys does). This will tell the technician if it is producing enough "juice".

If it is... no problem, just buy a new volt regulator (be sure to polarize the regulator prior to installation, there's instructions included).

If it's not... no problem, just buy a new generator. This CAN be pricy! OR... have the generator rebuilt... a much cheaper (and often better) option. ALSO, go ahead and buy a new voltage regulator anyway. It's DEFINITELY recommended (...and don't forget to POLARIZE IT!)

NOTE: I had a recurring problem with generators/volt regulators in my Gal. After I removed the original generator (because it wore out), I replaced it with a remanufactured one that I'd bought from an auto parts store (along with a new volt reg.) I didn't exchange the original for the core-charge (it was like $20 at the time). I'M GLAD I DIDN'T! The generator came with a lifetime warranty (thank God). The remanufactured generators would burn up after about 6 months and I'd have to replace them (luckily for free). After about the 4th or 5th generator in two years, I took the original and had it recored (rebuilt) and installed a "high-end" volt regulator (about $60, instead of $20). Problem solved. I's been about 6 years (of daily driving).

Good luck and keep that Gal on the road!

Discuss on the losses of generator power output?

The field excitation could have been lost. Check the output from the voltage regulator.

Where is the voltage regulator on a 1992 Chevy Astro?

the voltage regulator is built into the alternator, check voltage at battery connections should be 14.5 volts

How do you make generator output voltage stable?

Inside the generators junction box there will be termination points that the generator coils terminate on. On the inside of the lid of the junction box there should be a diagram for different connections allowed for that generator. By moving jumpers around across these terminals a variety of voltages can be obtained.

How do you check the voltage regulator?

Answer CHECK AUTO VOLT REGULATOR OUTPUT.WITH ENGINE OFF CONNECT DC VOLTMETER ACROSS BATTERY POSTS. METER SHOULD READ ABOUT 12.5 VOLTS. START ENGINE: VOLTAGE READING SHOULD INCREASE TO 14 OR SLIGHTLY MORE VOLTS., Unless the problem is the generator or alternator, in which case the same symptoms will appear. Nice try, but no cigar. That is not entirely correct, you would be correct if reading the charging system voltage on a 12v system. On my 4wheel 350 bruin it is around 10v and the xl250 1982 is around 8v, to check the generator/stator you need to read AC voltage and after regulator you need to check DC voltage, most people use the headlight check to see if the regulator is working fine, imo get the manual for the correct reading/maintenance procedures or elaborate on the question with the model and year of the vehicle in question.

Why is the voltage regulator overcharging the battery in a 1990 Ford econoline?

A bad voltage regulator can cause an overcharging condition. Check the wires going to the regulator for corrosion and make sure the regulator has a good ground.

How to test a internal voltage regulator?

A charging system test is done to check the internal voltage regulator. It can be done at any auto parts place.

Where is the location of the voltage regulator on a 2008 dodge ram 1500 truck?

The voltage regulator for the alternator is in the computer. If the voltage regulator in the computer does not work, you can add an external voltage regulator and then your battery will charge normally. Make sure to check the ground on the computer. If the ground is bad on the computer, then the computer will not regulate the voltage to the alternator properly.

What does the P1682 code means on a 1999 Dodge Intrepid?

It means the charging system voltage (is) too low, Check the alternator and the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator is a part of the powertrain control module or PCM.

Why the battery on a Harley Sportster would not stay charged?

It could be a bad battery or regulator. To check the regulator to see if it putting out the correct voltage check the battery voltage while the bike is running. It should be around 14 volts.

How do you tell generator on 1983 Honda gl 1100 works or not?

Start the generator and check the voltage output at the receptacles on the generator with an AC volt meter.

How do you know if voltage regulator is good?

Check voltage at the battery with car running, it should be well over 12 volts, also check alternator output.

Can you add an external voltage regulator to a 1999 wrangler?

You could but the check engine light will always be on.
